I may have joined the club...

About half-way through training for the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Half-Marathon I noticed my toe nail turned purple. I later learned this was somewhat inevitable and there wasn’t really anything I could do. Then I read this article about ultrarunners removed their toe-nails to avoid this problem. Well guys, that purple nail fell off tonight with my assistance and although it relieved some pressure, you won’t find me signing up for permanent toe-nail removal anytime soon.

10/25, I ran a Marathon and All I Got was This Hideous Finisher's Medal Edition

by sarahluz October 26, 2009

Oh my god it’s over!!! I can’t even believe it. Final time, 4:43, a little slower than my 4:30ish goal, but I got a bad stomach cramp in mile 19 and had to walk it out for about 5 minutes, and there was some sporadic other walking in the last 3 or 4 miles (but dammit if I didn’t run the last 1.5!)

It was harder than I thought it would be, I’m not gonna lie, and I don’t think Marine Corps is what anyone would call a particularly challenging course, save for a couple moderate hills (including one with .10 miles left in the course, those evil bastards). the first 10 miles flew by, the next 6 or 7 got tougher, and after that…well that distance will get to you. Or it did to me!

Favorite sightings on the course: the woman running the whole race dressed as 80s-era Madonna, complete with fishnets, black miniskirt, cone bra, and hair. The woman with the shirt that read “It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time” and the guy on the 14th Street Bridge (mile 21?) dressed up as the Grim Reaper, holding an axe and a sign that read “The End Is Near”.

first run in AGES

by agirlcalledhenrietta October 25, 2009

So I started real work in mid-September (up until now I’ve been a student so my only jobs have been holiday jobs) and needless to say, my running kind of fell off a cliff. From three to four 4/5 milers a week I’ve gone to doing nothing and even though I’ve deliberately eaten much less to avoid gaining weight, I’ve noticed that everything is just a little jiggly - my hips particularly. Also, my five minute uphill cycle ride to the station is getting noticeably harder than it was when I used to jog frequently.

Today I finally got off my arse and went out and ran 5.5 miles on a hangover and six hours of sleep. I have no idea how long it took me, probably just under an hour, but right now I feel AMAZING. Now that the clocks have gone back, it’ll be light much earlier, and now I just have to find the motivation to run at 6am.

10/18, last long run edition

by sarahluz October 19, 2009

Yesterday was my last long run before next Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon. Did 10 miles in 1:30, probably pushing it a little harder than I should have, but whatevs, I feel okay. I’m getting nervous, but pumped too. Hoooooly crap. This week a couple three milers then after Wednesday, that’s it.

Current forecast for Sunday: partly cloudy, 60 degrees. Oh god, please hold out, that would be perfect!

This is bad, real bad

emphasisadded:

Yesterday, my tooth broke.  I wasn’t eating anything particularly egregious (baked lays, actually), and my tooth literally crumbled.  Gross, I know…stick with me.

I cried and then made an emergency appointment with the dentist.  He took a look at the remnant of my tooth and told me I needed a ROOT CANAL.  The problem is that getting that procedure done would mean there was no way I could run the marathon on Sunday.  Obviously, not running was not an option.

So he said we could go for a “hail mary pass” (his words, not mine) and try to cover the nerve, bond it and hopefully that would buy me a few days.  He said I should know within 24 hours or so if this plan B worked.

I woke up this morning in excruciating pain and the entire right side of my face is swollen as all get-out.

I maintain, not running is NOT AN OPTION…however, I am having a hard time lifting my head, which doesn’t bode well for my scheduled marathon tomorrow morning.

I am panicked.  I am freaking out.  I am devastated.  But I am going to try and run that bloody race, even if it kills me.

Here is what I need from all of you- prayers.  Prayers that my tooth just stays out of my way for 26 short hours so my legs, ass and heart accomplish what it is they have been working so hard to achieve over the past 5 months.

Please.

That’s commitment.

I am definitely praying for you and I’m not even the praying type!

Hey runners,

I’m selling off miles for my marathon on October 18th as a part of Team in Training.  Follow the above link to see the various rates.  All proceeds go to benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Or you can follow this link and donate directly, if you’re shy or don’t need spare miles lying around the house.  The smallest donation makes a difference.

Thanks!

why cant i get back into it??

since vacation I cannot get back into working out. I tried yesterday with a 3.5 mile run but then ended it with a beer (I had a bad day, ok?)

I will try again tonight.

Question:I signed up for another 1/2 marathon Oct 18th.  As I just ran 21k last Sunday (Sept 27th) and have 18 days until my next 1/2, do you think if I run the light blue distances that is too much running? too little? or adequate? I really have no idea…
Thanks!
